Common Questions About Axle and CV Joint Repair
Are you experiencing symptoms of a failing CV axle or joint?
It truly is essential to have your vehicle checked by a certified mechanic as soon as possible. By identifying and addressing your CV joint issues early, you can help prevent more serious damage that will keep you safe on the road, along with causing more serious issues.
1. What are the signs that my CV axle or joint needs to be repaired?
Common symptoms include:
-
Clicking or popping noises when you turn, indicating a worn-out joint.
-
Noticeable shaking or vibrations while driving, especially at higher speeds.
-
Grease leakage is often visible on the inside of your wheels. Most often from a CV boot.
-
Knocking sounds when you accelerate or decelerate.
-
Loss of power to the wheels. This usually occurs if the CV joint fails completely.

2. Can I drive with a bad CV axle or joint?
Even though it is possible to drive for a short period with a damaged CV axle, we would not recommend this. A failing CV joint can lead to loss of control, making it quite unsafe to drive. Additionally, if you continue to drive with a damaged axle, this will cause further damage to other drivetrain components, which usually leads to more expensive repairs.
3. How much does axle or CV joint repair cost?
As with all vehicles, the cost will vary based on the vehicle's make and model, labor rates, and the extent of the damage. Visit us for a free inspection – we’ll provide you with upfront pricing! Usually, prices are higher for luxury or imported vehicles.
4. Should I replace both CV axles at the same time?
If one CV axle has failed, we recommend that both be replaced. Because both axles have experienced similar wear and mileage, replacing them at the same time can help avoid future problems and reduce overall labor costs. However, replacement may not be necessary if the other axle is still in good condition. We’ll inspect for free and let you know!
5. How long does it take to replace a CV axle or joint?
Repairing the CV joint will vary depending on the vehicle's complexity and the mechanic's experience. Typically, replacing a CV axle takes between 1 to 3 hours. However, the process may take longer for vehicles with more complex designs or additional repair needs
6. Can I replace a CV axle on my vehicle myself?
Well, replacing a CV axle is a complex task! This requires specialized tools and mechanical knowledge. To ensure safety and proper installation, we’d recommend that an experienced mechanic perform this task.
