Clutch Slipping? Having Trouble Shifting? Let Us Take a Look.
If your clutch is slipping, the gears are difficult to shift, or something just does not feel right when you press the clutch pedal, do not ignore it. Get it looked at and fixed before the problem escalates into a more expensive repair.
A clutch problem can start out as something minor and then turn into a much bigger repair if you keep driving it.
The good news? A clutch problem does not automatically mean you need a complete clutch replacement.
At Coleman Taylor Transmissions in Murfreesboro, our ASE-certified technicians diagnose and repair clutch and manual transmission problems for domestic and import cars and trucks. We also work on high-performance, antique, and specialty vehicles.
Start with our FREE transmission diagnostic.
What Does the Clutch Do?
Your clutch connects and disconnects the engine from the manual transmission.
When you press the clutch pedal, the clutch disengages so you can change gears. When you release the pedal, the clutch engages and transfers engine power through the transmission and drivetrain.
It sounds simple.
But several components work together to make that happen.
When one of those components starts wearing out, you may notice changes in the way your vehicle shifts, accelerates, or responds to the clutch pedal.
What Are the Signs of a Clutch Problem?
Clutch problems can show up in several different ways.
You may notice:
-
The clutch slips when accelerating
-
The engine revs but the vehicle does not accelerate normally
-
Difficulty getting the vehicle into gear
-
Grinding when shifting
-
A clutch pedal that feels different than usual
-
A clutch pedal that is hard to press
-
A clutch pedal that feels unusually soft
-
Shuddering or vibration when releasing the clutch
-
Difficulty getting the vehicle into reverse
-
A burning smell after driving
-
The clutch engages very high or very low
-
The vehicle moves when the clutch pedal is fully depressed
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth having the vehicle checked before the problem gets worse and more expensive to fix. Come see us today!
Clutches Generally Have Two Basic Jobs
A clutch needs to do two things properly:
1. Engage the engine and transmission when you release the pedal.
2. Disengage the engine and transmission when you press the pedal so you can shift gears.
A problem with either function does not automatically mean the entire clutch assembly needs to be replaced.
Sometimes an adjustment, hydraulic repair, or another smaller repair can solve the problem. We see this often!
That is why a proper diagnosis comes first, and why it is complimentary at our transmission shop.
Clutch Repair vs. Clutch Replacement
This is an important distinction.
If your clutch is acting up, you may immediately assume that you need a complete clutch replacement. That is not always the case.
The actual cause could involve the clutch itself, the clutch hydraulics, linkage, or another component of the manual transmission or drivetrain.
Our technicians will inspect the vehicle and explain what we find after the analysis.
If a complete clutch replacement is necessary, we will explain why. If a smaller repair can solve the problem, we will tell you that instead.
We believe in fixing what actually needs to be fixed—not selling you repairs you do not need. This is has been our belief since we opened our first of 12 shops back in 1961.

Clutch Repair FAQs
What are the signs that my clutch is going bad?
Common signs include clutch slipping, difficulty shifting, grinding gears, shuddering, a burning smell, unusual clutch-pedal feel and difficulty getting the vehicle into gear.
Does a slipping clutch always need to be replaced?
No. A slipping clutch can have more than one possible cause. A proper inspection by specialists is needed to determine whether the clutch itself is worn or whether another component or adjustment is causing the problem.
How long can I drive with a slipping clutch?
It is best to have it inspected as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with a slipping clutch can increase heat and wear and may turn a smaller problem into a more expensive repair. And it can be dangerous!
Why is my clutch hard to press?
A hard clutch pedal can have several possible causes, including problems with clutch components or the clutch operating system. The vehicle should be inspected to determine the actual cause.
Why does my vehicle grind when I shift gears?
Grinding can occur when the clutch is not fully disengaging or when there is another problem within the manual transmission or related components. A diagnostic can help determine where the problem is coming from.
How much does clutch repair cost?
The cost depends on the cause of the problem and the vehicle. A smaller adjustment or repair will cost differently than a complete clutch replacement. Coleman Taylor provides a FREE diagnostic and upfront pricing before major repairs.
Do you repair manual transmissions?
No. Coleman Taylor provides a free diagnsotic but does not provide manual transmission repair.
Do you offer FREE clutch diagnostics?
Yes. Our FREE transmission diagnostic can help determine whether your vehicle's symptoms are coming from the clutch, manual transmission or another drivetrain component.
