Think of the transfer case as the part that helps send power where it needs to go.
The case sits behind the transmission and sends power to the front and rear drive axles. On a 4WD vehicle, the transfer case is what allows you to switch between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.
Some transfer cases use gears. Others use a chain and electronic controls. Either way, several internal parts can wear out over time.

Grinding, clunking, whining, vibrations, difficulty getting into or out of 4WD, fluid leaks, warning lights, and jerking during acceleration can all point to a transfer case problem.
Can I drive with a bad transfer case?
It depends on what is wrong. Some problems can get worse quickly and cause additional drivetrain damage. If your transfer case is grinding, leaking badly, or will not engage or disengage 4WD, it is a good idea to have it checked before driving much farther.
